Work, commitment and the industry.

In the past few weeks I have been thinking and researching - work, commitment and the animation industry.  In the UK there are jobs in the animation industry, most are in London and they require a host of relevant qualification.

However the thought of me at 40, with a family, pursuing a professional career in this field, as much as I desire it, is impossible.  I don’t have the relevant qualification or skills and these days there is no other way to employ people.  I don’t have the time or the inclination to begin a degree course, considering my 12 hours working day at the moment.

So Machinima is the only avenue left to the likes of me, I’m sure there are other like me, who would do an outstanding job in the animation industry, but lack experience or the essential qualifications.

So this got me thinking to jobs I had done in my life, and only one role I have ever done, did I love.  This was as a sound engineer in 1989 – 1990.  I use to work during the week for some small company being paid a pittance and at the weekend work (Subjective) in a host of studios around Manchester for..nothing.

Someone once said “Find the job you love and you’ll never work again”.  If you get paid as well, it must be bliss.

These days I have a creative killing, mind numbing job, having people moan and complain about the service provided by the corporate company I work for.  Spending around 12 hours a day doing this, has a massive effect on your ability to be creative as most nights I’m too tired to even boot a PC.

I now have accepted my fate, I work for my family and in my spare time I’m committed to try and create interesting animations and music, and hope people like what I’m doing.  I’ll never make money from this but I’m happy, I enjoy it and nobody is on my back setting me targets.

I have had some great support given me recently as Reallusion have thrown their weight behind my project.  John C Martin II, Director of Product Marketing for Reallusion, has been in contact with me and it has been wonderful the time and support he has offered.

Regarding the project I’m currently held up, waiting for my voice over files.  I hate bothering people, but this week I needed to send out some reminders and hopefully should get the files in the next couple of weeks.  Animation has been dogged by iClone crashing on me from time to time when working on my special effects shots, but it won’t deter me :)

The promo video has been doing reasonably well, with over 100 views since release.

I’m releasing some new screen shots this week:-

To HD or not to HD.

I have been wondering lately if I should move up to High Definition animation, going to 720p or full 1080p.  So I decided to see what I would be working in, regarding files sizes and render times.  Currently an average 10 second clip, at DVD quality (720 v 576) takes around 7 - 10 minutes, depending on PC resources; with the uncompressed files size around 300 - 400 megabytes.

When I try to export to HD, I encountered a few strange problems, the main one being iClone crashed?  I had a message saying contact iClone help desk as the program had suddenly encountered an unexpected event.  Well HD isn't an unexpected event in my book but hey :)  So I continued on and finally rendered my test shot.  The 10 second shot took roughly twice as long, but the file size was massive, around 1 gigabyte.

Yes there are compression export settings but I just wanted to have the RAW files exported.  I suppose I'm going to stick with DVD quality for the foreseeable future.  However once Capemedia studios are built later this year, I do hope to own a render machine, so my PC will not be tied up and I can edit my files whilst others are being done.

I have finally cast the last few parts for 'The Forgotten Children', my good friend Ken White of TMOA has agreed to fill one of the roles.  The other roles are being done by an amazing actor and a good friend of mine, Stuart Green from the band Bax Rafter, he's the guy on the left.

Short promo video is now available on the films page.

In the world of Machinima I came across what I would regard as one of the best pieces of animation I have ever seen, made by Lit Fuse Films.  This talented bunch of directors have created a film called Jill's Song, that has everything a motion picture should have and to think this is Machinima, well Hollywood watch out.

What amazed me about this film was the incredible performance of voice actor Richard Grove.  The way he crafted emotion into his performance was just outstanding, coupled with the amazing face animation, this film was just breathtaking.

This level of motion picture Machinima is where I aspire to get to and hopefully one day I'll get there.

That's all for now.

Production is in full swing.

Well what a few weeks I've just had.

'The Forgotten Children' has made some great progress recently, with a day spent capturing the voice files for many of the characters.  I am still awaiting those done by my friends overseas but so far the voice files sound great.

I'm currently at around 40% complete so a release date of July / August is still feasible, as long as the special effects shots don't take up too much time :)

I do intend to release something next month, be it a promo clip or full blown teaser, we will see.

I went to Disney with the family recently and it was very informative for me to look at how they animated in the 1930's as some of the techniques they used then, we Machinimist's can use today.  Things like layering and depth of field were done via glass plates placed varying distance from the camera in a device called a Multiplane Camera.

Looking back on how things were done, can only improve what we do today, granted we don't have the money or resources of these companies, but that should not prevent us from trying.

Regarding movies and films that have caught my eye is a short flash piece called 'Apache' by a very young animator called Justin Oh.  He presents a cinematic style piece with a strong soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and no dialogue.

Well that's all for now.

Action Scripting Started.

Well I've spent most of the last couple of weeks mainly writing for 'The Forgotten Children'.  I've re-written parts of the scripts and pretty much completed the Action Scripting.

The current count for shots in this project is running about 180 - 200, so there is plenty of animation to go.  Regarding animation I am still learning about the iClone software.  I had a scene the other day with getting on for around 12 G2 characters in it and just a camera pan.  This was the first time that my computer had crashed while trying to render, so I suppose I will need to rethink my shots when having multiple characters in a scene.

I have managed to build some complex sets for the underground research facility, but I must admit they are polygon taxing and maybe I need to think about this in some of my shots.  The problem is finding the balance between detail and computer resources.

I've finished the character list for this project, check out the page to have a look.

In the world of animation / Machinima I have been discovering some fine work done with  iClone and other software, like Macromedia Flash

Here is another great little movie made for The World of Warcraft Clan's by Wolfzone, check it out here.

Well that's all from me for now.

Pre-production has begun.

I have been quite busy recently checking out animation by other people while working on "The Forgotten Children".  I must say you really need to check out the work of Oscar Johansson at Deletion Quality, for me some of the best Flash animations I have seen on the web.

For those of you who are Adobe After Effects fans like me, then someone who is without doubt one of the finest users of this software is Michael Barnes.  I first noticed his work some years ago and the way he took "The Movies" made films to another level has both amazed and impressed me.  Check out his short movies Shootout, Transport and Saturation Point.  All these movies are very short but look at the quality of the pieces and the way he has crafted After Effects to produce his style.

Regarding "The Forgotten Children", I've moved information to it's own page so you can follow progress, a little like I am doing for "The Disciples (The Dark War)".

I've added a character list, with a picture and little bit of background on each, I will add more in time but for now I have the first four.

Well that's all from me for now.

New project name finally decided on.

Well time seems to fly by these days, but I have been making some progress on my next short.  In fact I'm considering making this into a series.  Now before you start saying "what about this and what about that", I said I'm THINKING about it.

"The Sword Dance" has given me food for thought and if people want to watch that type of thing, then who am I to argue with them.  So I'm working on my next short which in a way could be deemed a pilot episode.

The story was written many years ago by me and has immense scope to develop characters and story, so it has all the ingredients for a series.  The working title has been scrapped and the actual title will be:-

"The Forgotten Children"

I will produce a new poster soon but just as a teaser here is a couple of screen shots from the film.

All the best

Colin.

30.March.2008

British Summer Time begins and so does my Blog.

So I finally got around to updating my website, I have been so busy working on music and animation this part of Capemedia sometimes gets a little neglected.

Anyhow, I have been working hard on some music and my next project.  I have decided that "The Disciple (The Dark War)" will be made entirely in iClone 3The reason being I'm trying to move away from "The Movies" and even though I'm still learning iClone, for me it's my tool of choice.

Another thing which has really blown me away has been the the success of The Sword Dance which has been getting quite a few views on Youtube and also it has been featured on iClone TV and Mellor TV, which has taken me back a little.

I was also asked to discuss iClone on The Movies On Air - TMOA, on the 16th March 2008 and it was really nice to go on the show and talk about projects and software.

Due to the response of 'The Sword Dance' I have decided to draw my attention to doing shorter pieces, which will enable me to learn my software and try new things in preparation for my big project.  So here is a teaser poster of my next project:-

Hopefully I can keep this blog going and update when I can.

All the best

Colin.
